Building Holistic Support Systems for LGBTQ Students: Collaboration and Strength in Challenging Times
posted on: 01-28-2025
Reflecting on my time leading a training on California policy protections for LGBTQ youth in school systems in a vibrant and diverse district on California’s Central Coast, I was reminded of the power of collaboration and the importance of perseverance in this current climate. A group of school-based counselors, social workers, family support center leads, and paraeducators came together to discuss strategies for supporting LGBTQ youth in a district comprised mostly of Spanish-speaking families.
We explored the importance of culturally responsive curriculum and acknowledged the multiple challenges that seek to undermine the vibrancy of our communities. Focusing on the power of collaboration and determination, we discussed strategies for supporting LGBTQ students in these times.
What we unearthed was the collective power of community in building a sense of belonging, safety, and resilience. This comes at a time when LGBTQ hotlines are seeing a surge in calls, and school administrators are developing creative strategies to ensure students feel safe attending school. We acknowledged the uncharted territory our communities have entered and discussed the strengths of existing and still-standing California policies that protect employees’ rights to develop inclusive curriculum, support LGBTQ students who need safe spaces to land, and collaborate within communities to create safer and more supportive environments.
Key takeaways include:
- A review of California’s LGBTQ policies and their application in various case studies highlighted the power of policy awareness, community organizing, and collective fortitude in breaking down barriers to LGBTQ inclusivity in school systems. These conversations also pointed to broader implications for facing challenges designed to promote the marginalization of select communities.
- Collaborative and culturally responsive efforts are the strongest methods for ensuring students receive adequate wraparound services. Leveraging the strengths of various departments and community partners is essential to ensuring LGBTQ students and families feel supported, represented, and seen.
- Regular LGBTQ professional development trainings are critical for information sharing, especially within communities with a history of silence on LGBTQ matters (e.g., “we know, but we don’t discuss”). Many in attendance mentioned not being aware of California policies and were grateful to learn about the protections still in place. Several others approached me afterward to share stories of LGBTQ family members or youth they’ve supported, highlighting how cultures of silence serve to do harm.
As we continue navigating the complexities of supporting LGBTQ students in today’s ever-changing climate, it’s clear that collaboration and cultural responsiveness are key.
